Honorable Speaker National Assembly/President PIPS BoG, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq meets Parliamentary Reporters during National Round Table on PARLIAMENT-THE RIGHT WAY TO RIGHTS, December 01-02, 2016

    PIPS organized two-Days National Roundtable on Sustainable Development Goals Titled “National Roundtable on Parliament – the right way to rights” for Parliamentary reports on December 01-02, 2016. Honorable State Minster for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage/National Convener SDGs Taskforce, Ms. Marriyum Aurangzeb, inaugurated the event which began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. She emphasized the need to highlight social sector priroities of universal education, overcoming malnutrition prevailing in the country and health issues confronting the poor. The Executive Director PIPS, Mr. Zafarullah Khan, welcomed the participants and appreciated the role of Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) and National Assembly Directorate of Media in making the event possible. President PRA, Mr. Siddique Sajid, thanked PIPS for organizing first of its kind workshop for Parliamentary Reporters, in which in addition to the center more than 50 Parliamentary Reporters from all the provinces were invited to participate in order to enhance their skills for reporting relating to the Parliament of Pakistan. 
    The Honorable Minister gave a concise presentation on the “Role of the Parliament in Sustainable Human Development of Pakistan.” She highlighted a two-pronged role of media, i.e. Parliamentary oversight and helping Government in better performance. Deliberating upon the role of SDGs Taskforce comprising of MPs from national as well as provincial assemblies, she encouraged the media representatives to develop liaison with the SDGs Secretariat to get useful input for reporting pertaining to the role of Parliament in implementing SDGs in Pakistan.  She underscored the pertinent role media can play in achieving the set goals in a manner that “No one is left behind.” 
    A visit to the National Parliament was arranged for the participants of the workshop on Day one, during which they met the Honorable Speaker National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq during an interactive session. Honorable Speaker welcomed the participants and highlighted the role and working of the Parliament including the visions and mission of the SDGs secretariat. During the Q & A session, the participants were provided the opportunity to ask the Honorable Speaker questions on various issues. The participants also made a momentous visit to the Houses of the National Parliament - the historic National Assembly and Senate Halls as well as the newly setup Datoor Gali at the Senate of Pakistan.  The visit to the National Parliament was followed by an absorbing session on “Dissecting SDGs from the leans of Human Rights” by Executive Director PIPS, Mr. Zafarullah Khan, who identified the Constitutional guarantees in shape of fundamental rights that ensure State to proactively work for provision of its commitments in nearly all sustainable development goals. 
    Day two was dedicated to a Panel Discussion on “Health and Climate Change – Zooming on the core Challenge.” Former Member National Assembly of Pakistan, Ms. Shehnaz Wazir Ali, deliberated on “health and Nutrition Challenges of Pakistan in the Light of SDGs.” Mr Ahmad Ramay, Director SDPI, spoke on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change.” The Panel Discussion ended with a highly interactive Q & A session. The two-days event concluded with a Certificate Distribution Ceremony.  Executive Director PIPS, Mr. Zafarullah Khan, presented vote of thanks at the end of the Roundtable and appreciated the PIPS team for their untiring efforts.
