The Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS), in collaboration with the EU-funded Mustehkam Parlimaan Project, commenced a three-day workshop for Chairpersons of Standing and Special Committees of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab. The inaugural session, held at Serena Hotel, Islamabad, was inaugurated by Honourable Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Chairman Senate and President of the PIPS Board of Governors. Honourable Chairman Senate highlighted the importance of bipartisan collaboration and strengthened provincial institutions for effective oversight.
Honourable Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, emphasized the leadership role of committee Chairpersons in translating legislative priorities into action. PIPS Executive Director Mr. Asim Khan Goraya welcomed participants and praised the Punjab Assembly’s commitment to reform. He also paid tribute to Mr. Gilani’s parliamentary contributions and his recent election as Founding Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Seoul.
A high-level discussion followed, featuring Honourable Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan. Ms. Mary Cummins, Team Lead of the Mustehkam Parlimaan Project, reaffirmed EU’s support for democratic development in Pakistan.
The workshop continues at the PIPS Main Campus through April 25 with sessions on rules of procedure, fiscal oversight, and the lawmaking role of committees.
